The misty, green wilderness of Alaska's Tongass National Forest is rooted with trees older than America itself.

But these ancient trees will soon begin to fall. The Trump administration has finalized a rule to open up the wild, protected areas in the Tongass to logging and other development.[1]

Environment Colorado and our national network are coming to the Tongass' defense. We're joining a lawsuit to stop the logging, and we've set a goal to raise $20,000 this Giving Tuesday to fund our efforts to protect this special place for generations to come.

Many of the trees in the Tongass have stood strong for more than a thousand years -- so it's fair to say they've weathered the test of time.

Across the 17 million acres of the Tongass, you can find trees older than America itself -- trees that shelter grizzly bears, Alexander Archipelago wolves, and the largest known concentration of nesting bald eagles.[2]

All of this and more are now in jeopardy due to the administration's decision to exempt it from the Roadless Rule -- federal protections we helped win for national forests across the country.[3]

A place as precious as the Tongass shouldn't be clear-cut to make doorjambs and crown molding.[4]

Environment Colorado and our national network helped win the Roadless Rule to protect the Tongass and other national forests from logging in 2001. We gathered and delivered nearly 700,000 public comments -- nearly half of all comments submitted -- from our members and supporters, and we've defended the rule ever since.

Now, we're joining coalition partners in a lawsuit to protect these precious lands from logging once again.
