Dear Friend --

Eliminating nuclear weapons can feel like an impossible or incredibly daunting task sometimes. But if you break it down into practical, smaller steps, people often realise it’s not only possible – it’s actually happening right now.

ICAN’s strategy has always been to focus on pragmatic, concrete steps forwards. And this Giving Tuesday, we need your support to take the next step.

Our first step was to convince governments to negotiate a treaty banning nuclear weapons, we reached that on 7 July 2017.

Our second step was to get 50 governments to ratify the treaty so it becomes international law, we reached that on 24 October which means that on 22 January 2021, nuclear weapons will now be banned under international law.

Now, we’re about to embark on the third step of our campaign – implementing the treaty and making sure it has an impact on the nuclear armed states.

In 2021, when the treaty enters into force, we need to implement the new law through a number of projects that will:

• Challenge nuclear weapons decisions in parliaments of nuclear armed and nuclear hosting states,

• Provide communities impacted by nuclear weapons use and testing with long-overdue assistance,

• Get banks, insurers and pension funds to divest from nuclear weapons producing companies,

• Stop universities researching and developing new nuclear weapons,

• Mobilize more public and media pressure on nuclear armed and nuclear endorsing states.

And we need your help to do this.

Even before the pandemic, governments have been cutting funding for civil society and disarmament work. We expect the coming years will only get more difficult for us to secure funds to do this work. So we rely on committed individuals like you to step up and help us challenge them. Will you support our next steps by making a donation?

Together, we created a historic new law that bans nuclear weapons. Now we need to double down and make sure it will be as impactful as it can be.

Thank you for all that you do,
