My story with OutRight

Dear John,

My name is Micheal Ighodaro. I’m a gay man from Nigeria and a Program Manager at an organization advocating for HIV prevention to end AIDS. It’s with my knowledge and my experience that I also have the honor to be a Co-Chair of OutRight’s Board of Directors.

My story really isn’t different from any other gay man from Nigeria. The constant mocking, harassment, and abuse that follows all LGBTIQ people mimics my personal narrative.

Outright Action International however, has been a key difference in my story. This organization has helped me grow so much as a person over the 15 years I’ve known them – and as an international organization at the forefront for LGBTIQ equality – OutRight strives to positively impact LGBTIQ individuals like myself, everywhere.

Will you give today to support our movement? ([link removed])

Ever since it was founded 30 years ago by Julie Dorf, OutRight has been dedicated and committed to the equal rights of people everywhere.

Before I got to know about OutRight, I believed that the LGBTIQ movement had too much of a local focus. But OutRight stepped up 30 years ago and filled the position our global community needed – a leader in the fight for international LGBTIQ equality.

OutRight has done the impossible and created a platform for me and other marginalized people in my country and region to speak truth to power. They have created a space for LGBTIQ activists across the globe to have a voice at the highest level of government to demand our equal rights.

In the 30 years since OutRight was founded, so much has changed for the better, including a gradual acceptance happening in Nigeria that I am really excited about. But there is a LOT left to do.

Before OutRight’s 50th anniversary, I hope to see today’s flickers of change become a raging inferno.
I want us to achieve and move past the push for marriage rights and decriminalization of colonial homosexuality laws in countries, and gain the right to work, equal pay, and housing rights. Basic rights that the LGBTIQ community is too often denied today.

My hope is that the world will be celebrating massive Prides as we see across the US. That they become a celebration of diversity everywhere.

It might be a lot to hope for, but I think we can get there. Today is Giving Tuesday - please give today and support OutRight’s future if you can.

In solidarity,

Micheal Ighodaro
Co-Chair of the Board
OutRight Action International

PS. Thanks to a few generous donors, everything we raise today on Giving Tuesday will be matched up to $15,000. This means every dollar you give will be doubled.
