Dear John -
Ten years ago, I sat down and recorded a message of hope for LGBTQ+ youth.
I wanted them to know a bit more about me and my story so that they would know that it gets better.
I was one of thousands of people who recorded a video in the first year of the It Gets Better Project. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I hoped that my words and my story would resonate with someone watching and inspire them to hang in there.
In that video, I said that when I was younger, I had a lot of shame about being different. I overcompensated by devaluing myself and putting myself down, something a lot of queer people can probably relate to. But it got better, and as I said in that video, “you learn to love yourself and you learn to love your specialness.”
I’ve worked with the It Gets Better Project several times since recording that video — earlier this year, I included the Project in the release of my song “Courage to Change” because I believe in the power storytelling has to change lives and to shape legacy. The It Gets Better Project started as an effort to uplift young people who were struggling. Ten years later, through its Global Affiliate Network, its education program, and through the stories it collects and shares, this organization is not just helping young queer people survive... it is helping them thrive.
I am honored to advocate for the It Gets Better Project on #GivingTuesday. And today only, the It Gets Better Project’s Board of Directors will match all donations up to $10,000! That’s double the support for LGBTQ+ youth! [[link removed]]
We need all of the joy and positivity we can get in the world right now, especially young queer people. Please consider making a donation in support of the It Gets Better Project so they can continue their essential work uplifting and inspiring the LGBTQ+ leaders of tomorrow. [[link removed]]
I love you, keep going.
