This year has been full of trials and tribulations, with the pandemic exacerbating the already dire lives of many migrants arriving at the southern border.
Our border communities on both sides of the border have been uniquely impacted during the pandemic as thousands of migrants have been forced to remain in Mexico. While this posed a challenge for us and the over 15 shelters in Tijuana that count on your donations, our team found a way to continue providing the much needed support. We worked with the shelters directly to identify their most pressing needs. Some desperately needed washers, dryers, refrigerators and stoves. For our friends in one particular shelter, receiving the materials to build new beds meant that they could rest their heads in a bug-free bed. For another shelter, our support meant they could complete an expansion of the shelter to isolate migrants that contracted Covid-19.
We have found ways to sustain our Water Drops during the pandemic. We left over 1,200 gallons of water for migrant families crossing through some of the most dangerous routes in the desert in the hopes of a better life. This team of staff and dedicated volunteers spent countless hours scouting and prepping for each trek, and led over 35 water drops.
The pandemic has gravely affected undocumented workers, many whom that have lost their job or that are working less hours. Our organization began by helping immigrant workers, and we continue that legacy to this day. The Day Laborer Outreach Program has distributed over 700 care packages to workers. For some, these were the only meals they ate that day.
We were also able to secure legal representation for 10 migrant children in Riverside County through our Green Card for Kids Program. These children will now have the opportunity to remain in this country and to pursue their dreams. With your support, we expect to offer legal assistance to more children in the next few months.
Our biggest feat yet this year was helping obtain freedom for over 60 people from detention. Most of these people are seeking asylum from 16 different countries and feared dying in the covid-infested detention centers. Donating to our Familias Reunidas Immigration Bond Program will result in more lives being saved.
This is just a glimpse of all of the support and relief we have provided our immigrant community. I feel the impact we made this year in each of the lives of the people that we have assisted is truly unquantifiable. Yet, there is still more to be done.
Giving to Border Angels will guarantee that we continue with our mission of love, that is, an active love.
Sincerely,
Dulce Garcia, Esq.
