** Shared Prosperity Initiative to Receive Affordable Housing Award

On November 17, the Alliance for Housing Solutions will honor Arlington Community Foundation’s Shared Prosperity Initiative with the Ellen M. Bozman Affordable Housing Award. This annual award is given to individuals or organizations who have significantly advanced efforts to increase the supply of and/or to improve the quality of affordable housing in Arlington through leadership, innovation, and effectiveness over time.
The award honors the late Ellen M. Bozman, a long-time Arlington County Board member and leader on affordable housing issues. She was a co-founder of the Alliance for Housing Solutions and a member of its Board of Directors. The ticketed event will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington.

The Color of Housing: The History of Racism in Housing in Arlington
An Interactive Learning Workshop

Join us for an interactive program on the Federal Housing Administration’s mid-20th century use of redlining to prevent loans to Black people in selected areas. Using local maps and stories, local nonprofit Challenging Racism will show how these practices affected Arlington by locking in segregated housing and influencing housing patterns today. Over the course of her career as a librarian and executive director of Arlington Education Association Marjorie Hobart watched housing prices slip out of reach for county employees--especially the teachers. She hopes innovative ideas will be able to bring them back.

** Author Wilma Jones Holds on to Her Community

Fourth-generation Arlingtonian Wilma Jones spoke to an audience of more than 40 at the Alliance for Housing Solutions' September 17 happy hour. Her book, "My Halls Hill Family: More than a Neighbhorhood" chronicles the history of her family and the historically African American community in which she grew up.

** Policy Update: Park Shirlington Redevelopment

Park Shirlington was purchased with County assistance in 2017 to prevent the permanent loss of affordability through market-rate development on the site while long-term mixed-income redevelopment plans were being created. Please attend this important meeting to learn about the history and County goals of the site, proposed conceptual plans for the redevelopment and how the review process will work.
Here is a summary of the housing component from the project’s site plan page:
* The site currently contains 294 market-rate affordable housing units with rents affordable up to 80% of AMI.
* The site plan proposes to provide 100 committed affordable housing units.
* The loss of approximately 194 affordable housing units will be analyzed to determine compliance with the County’s affordable housing goals.
* An associated tenant-relocation plan will be reviewed to determine appropriate mitigation for assistance to tenants who may be displaced with the proposed redevelopment of the site.
