UPDATE: Judge Stops Trump Administration Efforts to Bar More from Asylum

Just One Day Before They Were Slated to Go Into Effect, Federal Judge Enjoins Broad Rules That Would Have Vastly Expanded Categorical Bars to Asylum

Late last week, IDP and allies scored an enormous victory as a federal judge in the Northern District of California issued a nationwide injunction against the Trump Administration's new rule that would have dramatically restricted eligibility for asylum-seekers convicted of low-level offenses and even people who are not convicted of a crime. The decision comes just one day before the new rule was set to go into effect. IDP, along with several other immigrant rights & advocacy organizations, filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California against the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice earlier this month, challenging the rule.

Check out press coverage of IDP's victory below:

IDP and allies find success in joint Week of Digital Actions and Digital Press Conference!

Together with our criminal justice partners, IDP held a digital press conference in late November, calling on Governor Cuomo to sign four bills into law, all of which would play an important role in protecting Black, brown, poor, and immigrant New Yorkers. All four bills, including the Protect Our Courts Act, passed the New York State legislature back in July.

The Driver's License Suspension Reform Act would end the practice of suspending people's licenses due to an inability to pay traffic debt, the Proximity Bill provides for parents to be incarcerated at prisons close to their children to make regular visits more accessible, and the Contact Tracing Bill ensures that personal information provided for the purposes of contact tracing will be kept confidential from law enforcement, including ICE.

Since the press conference, the #SignThemNow story has been picked up by news outlets across the state; we're hopeful that this spike in coverage and awareness will lead to the signing of all four of these bills, soon. The virtual press conference was part of our joint week of digital actions for Cuomo to #SignThemNow!
