The Actors Fund enews

We’re extremely proud of the many programs, services and directives that help more than 17,350 people in performing arts and entertainment. One such program, The Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative (PNWHI), addresses the myriad of concerns women face when dealing with serious medical conditions. Sadly, PNWHI’s founder, Phyllis Newman, passed away last weekend at the age of 86. But her passion to support her community will continue through the life-saving work done by the Women’s Health Initiative.

To expand our reach of life-changing resources for those in the industry, we’re bringing some of our highly successful programs pertaining to health and housing to Chicago! There’s still time to RSVP for our free workshops that help demystify information around affordable housing, health insurance and more in the Chicago area.

All of this work wouldn’t be possible without the generous participation of Broadway, off-Broadway and touring shows that raise invaluable funds for our services. These Special Performances (ninth shows added to an already rigorous week) and Producer’s Picks shows (when producers donate tickets so your entire purchase supports The Fund) are crucial to making sure we can continue to grow and expand our ability to support everyone in entertainment. We'd love to see you at our upcoming shows!

We’re so fortunate to have a community that’s dedicated to supporting each other through good times and bad—and we thank you for being a part of it all with us.

Remembering Phyllis Newman

We mourn the loss of Phyllis Newman, a beloved Trustee, member of our Chairman’s Council, and founder of the Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative, a program of The Fund. Over the years, Phyllis raised millions of dollars to support women in the performing arts and entertainment industry so they have a safe place to go to address serious medical concerns and get confidential and compassionate help.

Her career, on stage and off, spanned decades and mediums. She won a Tony in 1962 for supporting actress in a musical, and earned a special Tony, the Isabelle Stevenson Award, in 2009 for her dedication to women’s health and medical care. In 2016, we celebrated the 20th Anniversary of The Actors Fund’s “Nothing Like a Dame” benefit concert, all in honor of the Women’s Health Initiative at The Fund.

We extend our deepest condolences to her children, Amanda and Adam Green, and all of the family, friends and colleagues who will miss her dearly.
