John,

I fell in love with Burlington when I first moved here to attend the University of Vermont’s Environmental Studies Program and our city was led by Mayor Bernie Sanders.

Under Mayor Bernie Sanders’ leadership, I experienced first-hand Burlington’s transition from a place that put the interests of the wealthy and powerful above ordinary people to one that listened to, learned from, and fought for the people.

I am running for Mayor of Burlington because I know we can once again have that type of leadership in City Hall. Burlington can once again be a city for the people, a city that works for all of us.

A Pine administration will improve housing affordability, rental housing conditions, and protect tenants. I have fought for and built affordable housing across this city for over 30 years. As mayor, I will increase the supply of permanently affordable housing and demand that UVM step-up to ensure students have their housing needs met while also addressing the already too-high rental market.

We will create and support education and training programs. First and foremost, this includes union labor and apprenticeships for youth, women, and BIPOC people at the stalled City Place project. We will strengthen workforce development partnerships and link training to living wage “green-collar” jobs to build a local and just, green economy.

Together, we will change city policies and practices to drive equitable outcomes by recruiting more women and BIPOC leaders in city government and inviting multi-racial and multicultural partners to collaboratively design solutions. Those most affected should always be at the table as leaders, helping to make the decisions affecting all Burlingtonians.

We will ensure a just transition as we fight against the climate crisis. Together, we will lead regional climate justice conversations that unite the greater Burlington area on key strategies to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. We will also introduce sustainable and equitable funding mechanisms for energy-efficient rental housing, homes, businesses, and municipal buildings.

I am proud to have been a founding member of the City Progressive Party and to have served on the City Council under two different mayoral administrations.

My activism and my career have focused on pathways to leadership for youth and BIPOC communities, affordable housing, and building a thriving community for all - from reviving our Center City Little League to fighting policies that favor those with power and privilege over our neighbors who have little economic and social safety and security.

Together, we can return Burlington to a place that values people over profits.

In Solidarity,

Brian Pine
