As The Washington Post reports, “The Trump administration’s refusal to accept the results of the 2020 election draws upon long-standing white supremacist tactics -- the same ones that worked so effectively to destroy interracial democracy over a century ago.”
That’s because as states push to certify the election results, Trump and his loyalists are unleashing lawsuit after lawsuit to delay certification and throw out ballots -- especially in communities primarily composed of people of color.
Worse than that, Donald Trump has called on the full force of his misinformation media machine to cast doubt on the legitimacy of votes cast in those counties -- and his wolf cries are working. Over 73% of Republicans question Joe Biden’s victory and legitimacy as president-elect, and major cities like Washington D.C. are seeing millions of Trump’s supporters flock to protest the election results.
While Trump’s relentless claims of fraud might seem futile, we can’t ignore the effect they are having on our country. Political experts told USA Today: “The forces that have made President Trump’s misinformation such an effective strategy for him won’t go away. If anything, they’ll have a more receptive audience because negative information about a Biden administration will be even more appealing.”
After the immense work we’ve put in, we refuse to let Trump use his media tactics to maintain post-presidency influence; but after such a challenging election cycle for Democrats, we simply don’t have the funds we need to correct his lies at a wide scale.
