Mitch McConnell has reigned with complete impunity in the Senate for nearly four decades -- and, to his benefit, not nearly enough people have been paying attention.
McConnell proudly calls himself the legislative “grim reaper” -- and it’s not hard to see why. While most Americans focus their attention on high-profile figures in the executive, McConnell has used the Senate to block progress at every level.
He blocked Democratic efforts to add migrant protections during the Trump administration. He blocked efforts to increase the frozen minimum wage. He blocked renewable energy programs that would mitigate the climate crisis. Worst of all, he’s stopped Congress from granting additional pandemic relief because, according to him, working families don’t need that much help.
So what has McConnell said yes to? A massive tax cut for the ultra-rich he personally benefited from. Countless Trump judicial appointments. Sky-high drug price protections. And according to the GOP leader, “I couldn’t have been happier about it.”
McConnell’s agenda isn’t only outdated, it’s inhumane. And it’s about time we end his rule in the Senate. But no Democratic opponent will stand a chance against him if no one is paying attention.
