Right now, there are so many refugees and displaced families facing the threat of ongoing conflicts, rising hunger and the rapid spread of COVID-19. I hope you'll help by making an early Giving Tuesday gift today. Your gift will be used where and when it's most needed.
John, our work with refugees around the world is possible because of individuals like you donating what you can. I know this from my 10 years working at the IRC — and as a refugee myself.
During the civil war in my home country of Sri Lanka, my husband and I were moving targets. The conflict between ethnic Tamil separatists and the more powerful Sinhalese government was brutal and frightening. Because my husband and I are Tamils, we were immediately deemed suspect, even though we had no part in the fighting.
The government assumed we were rebels and terrorized us constantly, searching our home and threatening our lives.
In 2007, we were forced to flee to Thailand, but we were not yet safe. Thankfully, our application for resettlement in the U.S. was accepted, and in 2009, we arrived in New York. Our IRC caseworker met us at the airport and brought us to our apartment. It was full of all the basic necessities we would need, but most importantly, it was safe.
Thanks to the IRC and people like you, I was able to rebuild my life in America, and I now feel freedom like I had not experienced in a long time. My family can live without fear.
Today, John, you have the powerful opportunity to make 3X the impact for refugees like me. You can help the IRC reach vulnerable families who are currently living in fear — fear of COVID-19 and of war and famine. |
