Dear Reader,
My name is Ted Anthony, and I’m one of the newest members of the PublicSource board of directors. I’ve had the immense fortune to live and travel all over the world during my three-decade career in journalism, but somehow I keep ending up here – western Pennsylvania, where I was born and where I ultimately feel I belong.
When I think about why that is, I come up with one answer above all others: the continuing possibility of this region to encourage and grow excellence. Nowhere else have I been where things seem so possible, where the building of world-changing institutions seems so within reach.
But possibility is a dicey word. It doesn’t become reality all by itself. For a place and its people to be the best they can be involves looking hard not only at what makes us great, but at what makes us falter. It means understanding that the opportunities and ambitions that this region provides are often reserved for some but not others. It means facing the uncomfortable things around us, and deploying facts and insight in the search for remedies.
In short, it means the kind of work that PublicSource is doing in our region, day in and day out.
I joined the PublicSource board because I wanted to contribute to a community that gave me a solid foundation to pursue the things I value. PublicSource, for me, aligns with those values. It and its journalists are advocates of knowing what’s going on around us. Of encountering the world as it really is, not as we might wish it would be. Of believing in the power of facts and context to provide us tools to improve our lives and those of the people around us.
