Many of us have been affected by this unprecedented global crisis. The COVID-19 pandemic has overwhelmed health care systems, disrupted economies, and altered daily life in many parts of the world.
For some, this has meant changing routines, revising plans, and adjusting expectations. For myself and my colleagues, COVID-19 is a call to action. In a crisis, Doctors Without Borders goes where we’re needed most.
We’re responding to COVID-19 in more than 70 countries now—and my colleagues are witnessing firsthand the rapid spread of this disease and its devastating human toll. Doctors Without Borders teams provide medical and mental health care to those who need it most, promote health education, and offer vital infection prevention and control training. They are brave, compassionate professionals—but they depend on your support.
In Brazil, Doctors Without Borders is reaching out to indigenous communities hard hit by the coronavirus pandemic. Mobile teams in Mato Grasso do Sul state have already visited 11 villages to provide follow-up care for people who tested positive for the coronavirus and to detect new cases. We’re also doing community health promotion, and offering support and training for local health staff.
In Greece, Doctors Without Borders is providing medical aid on the islands of Samos and Lesbos. We are also calling for the immediate evacuation of refugees and asylum seekers trapped in squalid camps, high-risk environments for COVID-19 transmission.
In Syria, teams have provided training and technical assistance in Doctors Without Borders-supported facilities in Azaz and Idlib, including help with COVID-19 case identification, set-up of isolation areas at treatment facilities, and the management of patient flow.
In South Africa, teams from all four of our medical projects were temporarily shifted to assist with COVID-19 contact tracing and the development and dissemination of health promotion materials.
