Friend,
Giving Tuesday is December 1st – that’s next week! On this day, millions of people around the globe will join together to support causes they believe in. As a progressive thinkier in our movement and as someone who believes it’s time to end this disastrous war on drugs that has devastated communities of color, destroyed families, violated human rights, and wasted so many resources, I hope you’ll stand up for what you believe in on this once-a-year global day of giving.
In a political climate that makes it difficult to create change, the Drug Policy Alliance has made monumental steps forward in some of the places hardest hit by the drug war, from the Deep South to the Midwest, but there’s still so much to do. Your gift will TRIPLE with $150,000 of matching funds to end this unrelenting war on drugs, and help us continue the fight for drug decriminalization and more.
Your life can become a nightmare if you have a drug conviction. You can be refused housing, employment, student financial aid. You can lose the right to vote and your parental rights. And you can be deported if you’re not a citizen.
With the help from supporters like you, and our advocacy and political arm, Drug Policy Action, we have already been able to decriminalize all drugs in Oregon—arguably the biggest blow to the drug war to date. And we released a first of its kind federal framework for all drug decriminalization, the Drug Policy Reform Act.
We have seen marijuana legalized in 15 states and Washington, D.C., including, most recently, in the more conservative states of Montana and South Dakota. And we have made history with the MORE Act which was approved by the House Judiciary Committee. But, we must keep the pressure on the House to keep their promise to hold a full vote NEXT WEEK - take action now. It’s long past time to decriminalize marijuana at the federal level, expunge marijuana convictions, and start reinvesting in communities hit hardest by drug prohibition.
Friend, make this #GivingTuesday about ending this racist, inhumane drug war, and replacing it with compassionate drug policies. It is clear that Americans want to undo the criminalization of drugs and end this disastrous drug war once and for all. Now, we have to make it a reality.
You’ll have 3X the power to do that with DPA’s 150k Giving Tuesday Match, which you can start taking advantage of now!
