Oppose expanding "Stand Your Ground"

John,

My name is Aalayah Eastmond and I am a youth activist with Brady’s Team ENOUGH and a survivor of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

As a young Black woman and gun violence survivor, I’ve felt it’s been my duty to speak out for those who look like me. And, John, I need you to act with me now: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis just proposed expanding the state’s discriminatory “Stand Your Ground” law to empower armed citizens to shoot and kill anyone they suspect of looting. Basically, Gov. DeSantis wants to allow murder to be the penalty for property crime in Florida.

I shouldn’t have to ask myself, “Am I next?” when I’m organizing in the streets and protesting injustice. Please, join me in urging Gov. DeSantis to stop this proposed law to allow armed citizens to shoot and kill suspected “looters.”

In 2020, I’ve personally experienced more violent resistance than ever before when I’ve been peacefully rallying and protesting for racial equity and justice — and this violence should not be condoned or legally supported. The simple fact is that Gov. DeSantis’ proposal would increase violence that will kill Black and Brown residents. A body of research already shows that “Stand Your Ground” laws are used to ‘justify’ the murder of a Black victim by a white perpetrator. In Florida, the state’s existing “Stand Your Ground” law, which was enacted in 2005, led to a 32% increase in firearm-related homicides.

I’ve been fighting for change since I was nearly killed at my high school two years ago. Please, I’m asking you personally to join me in defeating this unconscionable measure by sending a message to Gov. DeSantis right now. >>

In solidarity,

Aalayah Eastmond
