Dear Friend,
I’ve written about how people willing to say or do anything in the interests of power are a danger to truth and free speech. PEN America has been instrumental in defending truth and facts. In fact, no other organization has done more to inoculate Americans against disinformation. No other organization has done more to protect the voices that the forces of racism and hatred seek to silence.
Over the past four years, we're seen the Trump administration try to put superstition ahead of science. And while the president will no longer occupy the Oval Office, the distrust and discord he’s sown is like something out of a nightmare.
I couldn't have written a scarier chapter in American history. And I'm relieved that we get to turn the page on Trump. But authoritarians learn from the mistakes of their predecessors. We can’t let down our guard.
