Weekend Reading
Dear John,
As we approach the holiday season, we want to say THANK YOU for supporting AFSC’s ongoing work for peace and justice throughout the year—and making it possible to respond to rising needs in these difficult times. We are so grateful for your support.
One example is the generosity the AFSC community showed in giving to support people in Guatemala who were affected by Hurricane Eta. You may have heard that a second storm, Hurricane Iota, made landfall in the same area last week. Our staff in the region are working closely with local partners to deliver humanitarian aid, thanks to supporters like you. Join us Thursday, Dec. 3, for a Facebook Live update from Luis Paiz Bekker, AFSC regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean. [link removed]
Here are this week’s resources to help you stay informed and support your activism:
Tell policymakers to protect incarcerated people from COVID-19: [link removed] In this pandemic, many of us are experiencing the pain of being separated from our loved ones—including those in prisons, jails, and detention centers. Join communities across the country in urging public officials to do everything they can to release people from these facilities, where at least 1,500 people have died and a quarter million have been infected.
New online art exhibit features immigrant youth activists in Florida: [link removed] Explore “Painting towards freedom,” featuring the works and words of immigrant youth activist-artists who illustrate their struggles in this pandemic, their deep love for their families and communities, and their commitment to organizing for migrant justice.

Please join us tomorrow, Nov. 29, for a program of music, prayers, and words of inspiration from the Muslim, Christian, and Jewish traditions—and messages from Palestinians and supporters to inspire hope and resiliency.
Tyson Foods suspends supervisors in wrongful death lawsuit tied to COVID-19 infections: [link removed] "We have known about this culture within this industry of minimizing concerns, lack of safety and the influence they have," says AFSC’s Alejandro Murguia-Ortiz. In Iowa and other states, AFSC is supporting communities calling for worker protections in this pandemic, including joining groups in filing a complaint against Iowa Occupational Safety and Health Administration for failing to protect workers at meat processing plants. Protecting our democracy post-election: [link removed] In order to ensure a peaceful transition from now through January, we need a multiparty coalition— including senators, members of Congress, governors, and world leaders—to stand up to the president and affirm these election results, writes AFSC’s Kerri Kennedy. (The Independent)
What truth and reconciliation looks like in practice: [link removed] As cities confront centuries of systemic racism, many are looking to Maine, where the first Truth and Reconciliation Commission between a sovereign tribal nation (the Wabanaki) and a U.S. state took place. (Next City)
Giving Tuesday matching gift offer: [link removed] It’s almost Giving Tuesday, a day when people around the world donate to nonprofits like AFSC whose work reflects their values. But you don’t have to wait! A generous donor is matching gifts starting today–up to $20,000.
Be well and take care
