Today, more than 45 million borrowers owe a staggering $1.5 trillion in student loans.
I am one of them.
I’m a Congressman, and I still owe more than $50,000 in student loans.
I'm fortunate. Both my wife and I have good-paying jobs. We can handle the payments, but I've heard from far too many families and students who face impossible choices.
Many struggle to pay for day-to-day necessities like rent, groceries, or car payments. For others, their student debt stands in the way of buying a home, starting a family, purchasing farms, or saving for retirement.
So, the student loan crisis not only harms working people, but it also hurts our economy from all of these purchases that simply aren’t happening.
In Congress, I’m working to address this crisis by introducing legislation to increase the Income Protection Allowance, extend students’ lifetime Pell Grant eligibility, and strengthen FAFSA.
