Dear John,
Your inbox is, no doubt, stuffed with offers for things to buy today. This email is not one of them.
No, this email is for all the cashiers, people stocking and restocking shelves, warehouse workers, delivery drivers, and millions more in similar jobs working during a pandemic, risking their lives. For the families struggling through this holiday season worried about having enough food to eat, or money to pay the heating bills. For parents and caregivers desperately balancing work and school and care.
And what have Mitch McConnell and Senate leadership done? NOTHING.
We can’t let a shopping bonanza distract us from what actually matters most right now. So here’s what’s on my list today. I’m hoping you’ll make room on your list too: [[link removed]]
Urgent, meaningful pandemic relief — workers need to be able to keep themselves and their families safe, and receive the support they need to survive the economic effects of the COVID crisis.
Child care funding — child care workers are disproportionately women of color, and they deserve fair pay. And working parents deserve access to affordable, safe, high-quality care for their children.
Fair work schedules — an end to unpredictable, volatile work schedules that make it impossible for working women to make ends meet and care for their families.
A livable minimum wage — two-thirds of minimum wage workers in the United States are women who can’t get above the poverty line on their income. No one should have to work two or three jobs just to make rent.
So if you’re shopping today, I hope you’ll help us score a better deal for the millions of struggling families and women working low-paid jobs too. Together, we can make real change, John — thank you.
Sincerely,
Fatima Goss Graves
