Hi Reader,
We know that our stories can often leave readers with a sense of outrage. And they should — the kind of work we do exposes serious injustices and breaches of the public’s trust that have real consequences for everyday people.
Just this week, we published an investigation that made me want to jump out of my chair. The story revealed that millions of Americans’ medical images — X-rays, MRIs, and CT scans — are easily accessible to just about anyone with a web browser. In some cases, personal data is accessible too, including procedures, doctor names, date of birth, and even social security numbers. This is an incredible breach of privacy for millions of Americans — should these records end up in the hands of bad actors, the results could be disastrous. What’s worse, no one is sure who's responsible for making sure this sensitive information is secure, though experts have been warning the medical industry about this for years.
Outraged, yet? Me too! Of course, outrage is just the first step toward ProPublica’s mission to spur change. We closely track the change that comes when we shine a light on wrongdoing like this: policies get reversed, legislation is introduced, people in power resign, and, hopefully, private medical information gets locked down and secured.
ProPublica is a nonprofit newsroom and much of our funding comes from readers like you. Today, I’m asking you to join tens of thousands of ProPublicans by making a gift and standing up for the power of journalism to spark real-world change that rights wrongs and holds people in power accountable.
We’ve got dozens of investigations brewing all over the country. Your donation today will support this work, giving us the freedom and resources to pursue injustice wherever we find it, for as long as it takes.
Thanks so much,
Jill Shepherd
