John,

This is the first Thanksgiving in my life I don’t want to spend with my wonderful, loving parents. I made it clear they were uninvited because the risk is too great.

But I’m also thankful they are alive and well (though lonely). For over 250,000 American families, the empty chairs at their tables this year are a grim reminder of the devastating toll that COVID-19 continues to take on American life.

In this extraordinary year, it may be difficult to feel gratitude, so I want to share a quick story:

When my first tour in Iraq finally ended, we got off the plane and piled onto school buses to drive back to base, and I started taking photos. Suddenly I caught myself and realized I had a dozen photos of random American homes in a nondescript California suburb. What was once normal seemed extraordinary—truly beautiful—after so long away. Without even noticing it at first, I had a newfound appreciation for the everyday things we take for granted in America.

One of the many truths I know about Americans is that we are resilient. We’ll get through this pandemic and come out stronger than before. My hope for us is that, when we finally do, we have a renewed gratitude for the daily parts of life we used to take for granted.

And until that time, I hope you are able to find grace in small moments of kindness and fellowship, whatever those look like for you this year.

I’m grateful for my family, especially because Emmy is going to become a big sister in a few months! I’m grateful for all of you, for your hard work and commitment to this team. And I’m grateful that in 2021, we will restore empathy, dignity, and competency to the White House.

In the face of adversity, let’s count our blessings. Happy Thanksgiving,

Seth
