Dear John,

Thanksgiving looks a little different for many of us this year, but here at LEAP, we are feeling thankful. Thankful for our law enforcement spokespeople, who give so freely of their time and their vast knowledge, lead by example, and show the world there are police working to make the justice system truly just. Thankful for our staff, who go above and beyond to make this organization’s footprint enormous, though our team is small and close-knit. Thankful for our board of directors, who are so committed to ensuring LEAP’s mission drives our work forward.

And we are beyond thankful for you, John.

2020 has been a challenging year. In March, as COVID-19 spread rapidly across the US and the world, we quickly realized the direction of LEAP’s work would change. Our speakers and staff adapted quickly, focusing on the urgent need for addressing the pandemic’s impact on our jails and other vulnerable populations. But just two months later, George Floyd’s murder changed the landscape of justice reform again, making police violence and racial inequity the focal point.

LEAP was built to address this national crisis. We are thankful to be able to contribute to transforming our broken justice system and grateful for the current spotlight on this issue. The long overdue visibility police violence is finally receiving exponentially increases the push to address it. LEAP speakers and staff have been busier in the past six months than any other time in the organization’s history. Though it has been a uniquely challenging year, while putting a hold on many aspects of our lives, we are given the chance for reflection. The reasons to give thanks outweigh the trials we are enduring.

The coming year will bring new challenges, and LEAP is more than prepared to address what’s ahead. Our work has never been more important. We’re grateful for all of the support we’ve received over the years from longstanding partners and over the past few months from those new to the cause. This is our moment, and it’s up to us to build it into a movement. For our communities, for the police who are in this for the right reasons and want to restore integrity to the profession, and for those who have been hurt by the system for far too long. For all of us.

Though this Thanksgiving looks different from years past, we give thanks for what’s ahead – real change to the justice system is coming, and we’ll be there every step of the way. As always, thank you for standing with us.

With gratitude,
