Friends -

Tomorrow's holiday celebrations will likely be a lot quieter for many of us as we do all that we can to limit the spread of the coronavirus. We're not traveling or seeing loved ones because it is so important that we keep each other safe.

But for many, the concerns are far more dire than what the day looks like. The pandemic has exacerbated our food insecurity crisis. Project Bread estimates that the pandemic has worsened food insecurity by 30 percent here in Massachusetts.

The lines at food banks are longer than ever, and so many of our neighbors are in need. The organizations on the frontlines of this work need our support this holiday season more than ever. So I want to ask you to split a donation among three of the nonprofits who are working to keep folks across the Bay State fed.

Can you split a donation of whatever you can afford among the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts, Project Bread, and Chelsea Collaborative? Every dollar makes an immediate difference in the life of someone struggling this year.

Long before the pandemic, I was trying to sound the alarm on food insecurity.

In 2017, years before the first case of COVID-19 was diagnosed, close to 40 million people struggled with hunger in our country, with one in six children left to wonder where their next meal would come from. It is estimated that because of coronavirus, an additional 17 million people could face food insecurity if job losses continue to surge.

But as a result of the pandemic, food banks have said that things are worse than ever. These frontline organizations have never seen this level of food insecurity, and they are crying out for our help.

So for those of us with the means to give back, supporting these food banks is one way we can make a big impact. Perhaps you're saving money by not traveling or making less food for your family, and this can be a meaningful way to give back instead.

If you can afford it, please consider splitting a donation among the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts, Project Bread, and Chelsea Collaborative.

Thank you for all you do for our movement and for each other. I hope you have a happy Thanksgiving however you are able to safely celebrate. Together, we will get through this crisis and rebuild.
