Many of us see news like this week's and ask “What is the world coming to?!” Let me assure you of this: sex trafficking is NOT a “modern phenomena.”
This week began with sex trafficking charges for Jeffrey Epstein and is ending with sex trafficking charges for R. Kelly. Some of us are cheering – but many of us see news like this and ask “What is the world coming to?!”
To feel sick is normal, and right. But let me assure you of this: Even though sex trafficking was only widely recognized as a crime about 20 years ago, it is not a “modern phenomena.” Sex trafficking has been happening for thousands of years. Bygone eras weren't "better times."
What’s the world really coming to?? The truth is it’s coming to a place where we see and name things that have always been wrong… where we are sick of it… where we stand with survivors... where we demand justice…. where we say not anymore. We believe — with defiant hope — that the world is coming to a place where this will end. And although weeks like this may feel like the world is getting worse, it is just the opposite.
It does feel worse now; but those are feelings, not facts. And those feelings matter! Because in reality, your rage, indignation, determination, and hope — are the means by which the world is changing for the better; the means by which we will end this.
