Friends & Neighbors,
Many of us, myself included, are gearing up for Thanksgiving tomorrow. An American tradition, the holiday has adapted into a day of unity, appreciation, and gratitude. But before we begin preheating our ovens and prepping for our feasts, I want to call attention to the complicated history behind the holiday.
It is Native American Heritage Month — designated to honoring and celebrating the heritage, customs, culture, and contributions of Indigenous Peoples.
But in order to do this, we simply cannot ignore the uncomfortable and dark history of colonization. We must acknowledge the many challenges that Native Americans have endured and overcome. And we must recognize the struggles of discrimination that Indigenous Peoples still face today.
I encourage everyone to reflect on systemic racism in our country — and I hope that we can learn from our past so that we can work together toward a more equitable future.
For now, let's honor the resilience of Native Americans and their unique story. Let's celebrate their rich culture and vibrant traditions! And let's commit to doing better for our Indigenous friends and neighbors.
Happy Native American Heritage Month!
Carolyn
