Joe Biden is expected to nominate Janet Yellen to be his Treasury Secretary.

Her nomination is historic in and of itself as she could become the first female Treasury Secretary in our nation’s history. (Yellen already made history as the first female Federal Reserve chair.)

And beyond that, Yellen — like any Treasury Secretary — would have far-reaching power and influence when it comes to the Biden administration’s economic policies and priorities.

Join me in congratulating Janet Yellen and in urging her to:

• Use the Treasury Department’s powers creatively and expansively to boost the economy and to provide financial relief for those who lost their jobs and businesses during the coronavirus pandemic.

• Lead the charge to repeal Donald Trump’s regressive tax giveaway to billionaires and Big Business and to replace it with a progressive tax system that eliminates corporate tax loopholes, taxes Wall Street, and adopts a wealth tax.

• Break up the big banks and financial institutions.

• Crack down on racially discriminatory lending and other practices in financial services.

• Force Wall Street and other lenders to take into account how projects they fund contribute to the climate crisis.
