John,

With Vice President-elect Kamala Harris becoming the first Black woman in our country’s history to head to the White House, California Governor Newsom has a big decision to make.

He must appoint someone to represent California in the Senate for the remainder of Kamala’s term.

Governor Newsom should continue Kamala Harris’s extraordinary legacy as the daughter of Black and South Asian immigrants and the first Black woman to represent California in the U.S. Senate. He should appoint California’s second Black woman Senator to fill this seat.

In fact, many news reports already indicate that two progressive Black women are on the short list to succeed Kamala Harris in the Senate: Congresswoman Karen Bass from Los Angeles and Congresswoman Barbara Lee from Oakland.

Let’s make sure Gov. Newsom hears us loud and clear:

Add your name to DFA's petition now calling on California Gov. Gavin Newsom to appoint a progressive Black woman to fill Vice President-elect Kamala Harris's seat in the U.S. Senate for the remainder of her term >>

ADD YOUR NAME

Thank you for raising your voice today. Vice President-elect Kamala Harris has already made an extraordinary legacy. Let’s make sure California keeps it up.
