John,
From all of us at the Animal Legal Defense Fund, thank you for being a friend to animals! In each fight for justice, you are there beside us. You share in every legal victory, every law we strengthen, and every new protection we secure for animals across the country. You are the reason more animals can live healthier lives with the dignity and respect they deserve.
Animals like Ben and Ricki. You helped rescue these magnificent bears from a lifetime of extreme psychological suffering. Ben had languished for years at Jambbas Ranch, a North Carolina roadside zoo, where he lived alone in a dirty, concrete cage. And Ricki had spent 16 lonely years trapped in a bare 250-square-foot cage at Jim Mack’s Ice Cream Shop in Pennsylvania.
With supporters like you standing with us, we sued Jambbas Ranch and Jim Mack’s Ice Cream Shop for keeping these animals, and several others, in illegal, deplorable conditions — and won!

Ben now lives in a spacious habitat at the Performing Animal Welfare Society’s sanctuary in California, surrounded by trees, grass, and a pool where he can swim. He has good food and enrichment, and caretakers who do their best to provide everything he needs to thrive! Similarly, Ricki has 15 acres of rolling grassland to roam, water to swim in, and the company of other bears at her new home at The Wild Animal Sanctuary in Colorado.
Jambbas Ranch had their license suspended — ensuring that the facility could not continue exploiting animals, and we rescued another 25 animals from Jim Mack’s Ice Cream Shop after they violated a settlement agreement from Ricki’s case. These animals are now living the happy, healthy lives they deserve — thanks to kind, caring supporters like you.
This is the power of your support, John. We hope you take pride in the progress we’ve made together and celebrate the lives you helped save. We wish you and yours a very Happy Thanksgiving, and look forward to our continued partnership in the weeks ahead. |
