Traditionally, for many of us this week begins a string of celebrations that bring warmth and light to the changing season. Of course, this year is different. There is reason to believe that the weeks ahead may be the most challenging of this turbulent year.
Thanks to our community of supporters and our incredible staff, NVFS is ready. Across our organization, the NVFS team is finding creative ways to make sure the needs of our clients are met.
Just last weekend, our staff and volunteers distributed meals to over 800 families as part of our Operation Turkey food drive. Not only will the drive help ensure a bountiful holiday table for many in our community, it will help keep the shelves of our Hunger Resource Center stocked.
Other ways we are strengthening our community this winter include:
- Filling two cohorts for our workforce training programs—one for aspiring food entrepreneurs on how to build a business, and one for business professionals looking to advance in their career.
- Building a thriving virtual schoolroom at our SERVE Family Shelter, where kids have a safe, encouraging environment to attend school online alongside educators who support their success.
- Distributing $3.3 million to families in need through the Virginia Rent and Mortgage Relief Program, helping to fend off a looming homelessness crisis.
- Launching the carefully-curated online store for our Clock Tower Thrift Shop, a significant revenue generator for us that was slowed due to the pandemic. It’s a perfect place to buy unique gifts for the holidays while supporting our work!
This week, we are thankful that friends like you continue to stand with NVFS. We never shut our doors, and you never stopped supporting our neighbors. You are compassionate, strong, and always willing to extend a hand to those in need.
We look forward to continuing our work with you to bring warmth and light to those around us. Enjoy this week, however you choose to celebrate!
With gratitude,
