November News: Reasons to Stay Optimistic

Dear John,

You don’t need us to tell you that it’s been a difficult year so far. But – despite the global pandemic – there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic right now.

Today we wanted to share the stories of a few refugees who are ready to help communities heal from coronavirus, and show how support from UNHCR is enabling people to forge exciting new lives after years of struggle.

Meet Nosizi, the first girl in her stateless community to go to university

20-year-old Nosizi is making history as the first Shona woman to go to university in Kenya. Being stateless had prevented her from continuing her studies. But, with help from UNHCR, she has been issued with a birth certificate and is free to follow her dreams.

Nhial Deng, a South Sudanese refugee is ready for a seat at the table

Refugees, including Nhial Deng, have been sharing their insights on how to rebuild communities devastated by COVID-19. See how they’ve been showing governments, academics, businesses and international organisations that they’re ready to tackle issues of poverty, inequality and exclusion.

Your support is what helps to keep us positive. As we enter one of the hardest winters refugees have ever faced, having people like you on board makes our work possible.

Thank you,

Breno Valentini

P.S. You can now see exactly how coronavirus has impacted our work to protect refugees in every corner of the world. Take a look now!
