John,
Our team is planning for the coming year. The truth is we have a lot of opportunities to push forward policies that protect against surveillance and will make the Internet more accessible to everyone; and we are also going to have to fight off attacks on free speech and other essential rights.
But the thing is, we can’t do any of this work without the support of grassroots donors like you. Can you start a monthly gift right now to make sure we can fight together, every month, to defend your essential rights in the digital age?
DONATE
We’re thanking everyone who starts a new monthly donation of $10 or more by sending you a new Fight for the Future poster, designed by our world famous graphic designer.
Here are just a few of the fights we’re gearing up for:
-
Net Neutrality: we’re finally going to be rid of FCC Chair Ajit Pai, and we’re pushing to replace him with someone who will actually fight for Internet access for all (and not someone with deep ties to Comcast or Verizon). Then we’re going to engage our grassroots army to fight to reinstate net neutrality and ensure everyone has access to the Internet as we continue through the pandemic.
-
Free speech online: Democrats and Republicans alike are attacking Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act—the law that allows web platforms to host user generated content like our memes, videos, selfies, jokes, and opinions. We need to run a massive campaign to educate and mobilize people around Section 230 and bring together a big-tent coalition of small and medium sized web platforms and civil society groups from across the political spectrum to protect free expression online.
-
Facial recognition: we’ve seen a ton of momentum in the campaign to ban facial recognition this year. From getting a federal ban introduced in Congress to winning local bans in cities from Portland, OR to Portland, ME, it’s clear that opposition to this toxic technology is growing. We’re continuing to push for local bans in cities like Los Angeles, New Orleans, and Detroit; we’re ramping up efforts to pass federal legislation; and we’re pushing the Biden Administration to take a strong stance against facial recognition.
-
Amazon: Amazon’s massive surveillance empire subverts our basic civil liberties, threatens our privacy, and makes us vulnerable to cyber-crimes. We’re continuing to fight Amazon’s partnerships with law enforcement that offer the police an easy way to request and store footage from Ring cameras en masse without probable cause. We’re also targeting the FCC to keep new tech—like Amazon’s surveillance drone that invades our privacy, collects our data, and monitors our every move—from coming to market based on the threats they pose.
On top of this we’ve got a new campaign to take on big tech monopolies, more work to defend end-to-end encryption, continuing to fight the PATRIOT Act, working to pass strong data privacy laws, and defending decentralized technology like crypto.
The long and short of it is that there is a lot we need to do.
As a small team, we have to ruthlessly prioritize. But we can do more when people like you support this work as monthly donors.
Please know that when you donate to us we do everything we can to make it count. With your support, we commit to taking on the battles where we can have the most impact, to fighting the fights that others won’t, and focusing on the issues that impact the most marginalized.
If you can, please start a monthly donation today to support all of this work and more to fight for an Internet and a world that you want to see.
Together,
Caitlin at Fight for the Future
P.S. When you become a monthly donor at $10 a month or more, we want to thank you by sending you a brand new Fight for the Future poster that shows your commitment to fighting with us. Start your monthly gift now.
