This Black Friday, Amazon's deals aren't worth the price of surveillance. Choose community over fear.Â

Hello MediaJustice Community,
My name is Tracy Rosenberg, the Executive Director of Media Alliance ([link removed]) , a Bay-Area based member organization of the MediaJustice Network. Together, we’re focused on expanding our movement’s capacity to combat #BigTech threats to our communities.
The COVID-19 pandemic exposed and deepened existing inequalities. Nationwide demands to #DefundPolice and invest in communities hardest hit by capitalism, white supremacy, and state-sanctioned violence are being undermined.[1] This backlash is driven by corporate monopolies like Amazon, who perpetuate and profit from the criminalization of communities of color by turning everyone into a cop.[2]
Media Alliance has just finished a new report on the rampant racism that Amazon’s Ring is feulling in San Francisco. ([link removed]) The report uncovered troubling data: in San Francisco, the majority of Black people captured on Ring cameras are routinely described as “criminals,” “suspicious,” and worse on Ring’s social platform. We found that nearly 60 percent of the “crimes” reported failed to show an actual crime. This is unsurprising, because Amazon’s true intention here isn’t our safety—it’s their profits. Amazon has built partnerships with 1,627 police departments across the country, providing them with data from the Neighbors app and Ring. Since the murder of George Floyd, Amazon has added 287 new police partnerships.
We will not accept simply putting Black Lives Matter signs in our windows while installing Amazon-cop spying networks on our doors. Today, I’m proud to choose community over fear and solidarity over surveillance as I make the choice to #BreakUpWithAmazon ([link removed]) .
This new MediaJustice campaign provides an organizing platform to support local organizing and demand that Amazon terminate all their existing relationships with police. Here’s how to get involved:
* Learn: Visit the new microsite! ([link removed]) There, you’ll find more information about Amazon’s extensive investment in policing and ways to support and defend Black communities from Amazon’s harmful surveillance and business practices.
* Act: If you’d like to learn more about the campaign or want to launch a campaign in your city to #BreakupWithAmazon, take the pledge ([link removed]) and reach out to Team #MediaJustice (mailto:
[email protected]) .
* Support: MediaJustice Network members like Media Alliance are at the heart of MJ’s work. Your donations go directly to amplifying critical voices, strengthening grassroots capacity nationwide, and creating change through innovative campaigns like this one. Please consider supporting the MediaJustice movement with a donation ([link removed]) if you are able to!
In solidarity,
Tracy Rosenberg and Team #MediaJustice
