Today, along with my own family and so many others across the U.S., I am preparing for a Thanksgiving that lacks the physical togetherness of years past, but a day that nonetheless remains full of reflection and gratitude. 2020 has been hard on all of us. The moments that have given me the most hope have been those spent with Freedom House staff and supporters. Our shared mission to defend and promote freedom and democracy around the world has never been more challenging and important. You, Freedom House’s friends and supporters, have stepped up and prioritized this work despite unrelenting uncertainty. For this I am especially grateful.

Our reports this year have shown Freedom House’s efforts to defend democracy are more significant now than ever as COVID-19’s effects on democracy mount both at home and abroad. Today, I can’t help but think about the activists around the world who continue to risk their lives to fight for democratic principles. People taking the streets in Hong Kong and Sudan, as well those in Chile, Iran, Belarus, and the United States, are all part of the same global effort. You directly impact these brave human rights defenders by helping Freedom House amplify their voices and demand reform. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere, and we all have a vital interest in the common cause of human freedom.
