Familia,

Sunday marked the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month -- El Mes de la Herencia Hispana -- a celebration and recognition of the contributions Hispanics and Latinxs have made to the United States through our culture and native heritage.

Sure, the President may send out a tweet and the White House may host an event.

But we make no mistake, Donald Trump is the most anti-Latinx and anti-Hispanic president in our history.

Trump launched his campaign by calling Mexicans rapists and criminals. He claimed a judge couldn't do his job because of his Mexican heritage. He attempted to depress Latinx participation in the upcoming census using blatant scare tactics. He denied the deaths of thousands of Puerto Ricans after abandoning them in their time of need.

He's cancelled DACA and effectively ended asylum at our southern border. He and his administration separated families and locked kids in cages. He even ended protections for immigrants seeking life-saving medical care.

He consistently and intentionally uses dehumanizing language when referring to Latinx immigrants -- words like "illegal," "alien," "animals," "infestation," "invasion."

Just last week at a campaign rally he asked the crowd, "Who do you love more, the country or the Hispanics?" I have news for him, we are the country.

And despite all of the racist rhetoric and xenophobic policies -- the constant questioning of our American-ness or worthiness -- we know that this administration's bigotry won't stop us from exercising our rights. Their attempts to silence our voices won't work. Latinx voter turnout hit record highs in the 2018 midterms -- and we won't stop there.

Here in Texas, we're seeing our Latinx communities go from unregistered to active voters in a shorter period than other groups. We know that the Latinx vote is a root cause of the change happening in the Lone Star State.

This month, let's show how strong our community is. Share this article on how Latinx voters are making Texas a battleground state with your friends and family, and encourage people you know to register to vote:

Our Latinx community is loving and welcoming, and we will continue to honor our heritage and cultural contributions to this country every day -- with our dialogue, with our fellowship, with our accomplishments, and especially with our vote.

¡Feliz Mes de la Herencia Hispana!
