Bipartisan climate group forming in U.S. Senate

Two U.S. Senators are stepping up to the plate on climate change in a major way. Sen. Chris Coons, a Democrat from Delaware, and Sen. Mike Braun, a Republican from Indiana, are creating a bipartisan climate group in the Senate. The news broke late last week with a story in the Washington Examiner.

Sen. Braun told the Examiner that climate change should be a “bridge issue,” and he is hopeful several of his Republican colleagues will join the group with him.

Sen. Coons agreed, saying, “Combating climate change will require all of us—Democrats and Republicans—to come together around bipartisan solutions.”

CCL’s Danny Richter was also quoted in the article, explaining that this group will be a valuable place for bipartisan discussions. “My hope is it will also be a place for action,” Danny said.

CCL gives input to Energy & Commerce

Recently, the House Energy and Commerce Committee requested CCL’s view on climate policy questions. Jerry Hinkle and Rick Knight, CCL’s two Research Coordinators, worked with our D.C. team to prepare answers for the committee. They submitted CCL’s answers last week, and now you can read them for yourself.

Donor-Advised Funding: Insights from a donor

A donor-advised fund (DAF) is a tax-advantaged way to give to Citizens’ Climate Education (CCE), the 501(c)(3) partner organization of Citizens’ Climate Lobby. If you’re able to donate a minimum of $25,000 to start a DAF, these funds are counted as a large tax-deductible gift for that tax year, but can be distributed to CCE over multiple years. Based on your investment choices, your initial gift to a DAF can also grow over time to support our climate solutions work.

One of our donors cites donor-advised funding as “a straightforward way to donate and maximize your tax deductions, while making major donations to CCE over time.” If you have the funds to make this donation, have appreciated stock, or would like to avoid capital gains taxes on your donation, a donor-advised fund may be the right gift vehicle for you. “It’s all about the tax benefits,” she says, because this gift vehicle can grant you major tax deductions while also allowing you to support CCE.

Our donor also explains that setting up a DAF doesn’t have to be an intimidating process. She says, “It was easy to do, and there are multiple wealth management companies that can provide specific instructions.”

For more information about setting up a DAF or making a gift to Citizens’ Climate Education from your DAF, contact the development team at [email protected] or ask your financial institution for more information.

Grasstops: Thanking a local town council

The Town Council of Truckee, Calif., has passed two resolutions: one in support of climate action, and another more recent one specifically endorsing the Energy Innovation Act. The CCL North Tahoe chapter gathered local citizens and the council members themselves to create a piece of “participatory artwork” to express their gratitude and appreciation for the council’s leadership. Pictured above are North Tahoe group leader Deirdre Henderson and artist Sara Smith with the piece, titled “Earth Works." Read the full story here.
