John --
Joe Biden is our President-elect! Now, we're working to hold him to his campaign pledge to rescind the permit for TransCanada's proposed Keystone XL pipeline.
After a months-long coalition effort to get all the Democratic candidates to take the "NoKXL Pledge," Biden's campaign released this statement back on May 18:
"Biden strongly opposed the Keystone pipeline in the last administration, stood alongside President Obama and Secretary Kerry to reject it in 2015, and will proudly stand in the Roosevelt Room again as President and stop it for good by rescinding the Keystone XL pipeline permit."
When asked directly by reporters about his campaign's NoKXL pledge, Biden said in June:
"As president I'm going to restore our position, rescinding the permit issued by Trump for any significant infrastructure projects, including pipelines, support the establishment of a process requiring that there must be a full review and accounting of the impacts on climate, local and environmental health and climate justice before any project can proceed."
Despite this crystal clear intention of the incoming Biden Administration to cancel Keystone XL, TransCanada / "TC Energy" and the Petro-State of Alberta are delusional, saying they can convince President Biden to "change his mind" -- and they are still pushing ahead with preparations to build the pipeline in Nebraska, South Dakota, and Montana amid a massive spike in the coronavirus pandemic in the region.
The Holt County, Nebraska Board of Adjustment recently voted to reject a Keystone XL construction permit application, after hearing nearly four hours of (masked) opposition from local farming and ranching families.
Meanwhile, TransCanada is actively seeking another permit to build a "Construction Yard" in Plainview, Nebraska (pop. 1,246), and is demanding that the Plainview City Council hold a public hearing to advance its permit next Monday, Nov. 30.
With the current Covid-19 public health restrictions, attendance is limited to 25% of capacity -- or approx. 25 people total (including all City Council members and staff, and TransCanada's team of attorneys and representatives).
Bold is not encouraging folks to attend the hearing in person, and the City Council has stated that it will allow the local newspaper (Plainview News) to broadcast the hearing live on Facebook, and also to have its representative read public comments and questions submitted online to the City Council.
Watch the hearing live on Monday at 6:30 p.m. and submit a comment.
Finally, Bold and myself are excited to announce our full-throated endorsement of Congresswoman Deb Haaland for Secretary of the Interior! Rep. Haaland would break history as the first Native American Cabinet secretary.
The moment is now for the Department of the Interior to be Native-led. Rep. Haaland will protect the land and water for all generations.
Thanks for standing with us.
