Hi, I'm Phil.
I am an organizer in Sacramento, California, with National Nurses United. I don’t usually write emails like this, but today I have a very exciting announcement and an invitation for you.
In order to win Medicare for All – we need to pursue every avenue available to us. One avenue we have while we continue to build power at the national level is to fight for single payer health care at the state level.
States can, on their own, decide to move every resident in their state to their own version of a Medicare for All system. That’s why we’re about to embark on a huge campaign to fight for single-payer health care in California to set a powerful precedent for the rest of the country and get one step closer to Medicare for All nationally.
We know you don’t live in California, but we want to invite you to stay in the loop about this campaign if you’re interested. Add your name here if you want to stay up to date about our California campaign and how you can help.
Even if you don’t sign up, we’ll still send you updates from time to time in key moments when national pressure could advance the campaign. But if you want to know the latest, sign up above. And If you know someone in California who wants to be involved, please forward them this email!
If you’ve been part of this movement for a while, you know that California nurses have been fighting for single-payer for decades.
In 2017, a single-payer health care bill – SB 562 – passed the State Senate but was stalled in the Assembly.
We think that the circumstances of the pandemic are ripe to relaunch a renewed effort for health care justice this January. California has the opportunity to be a leader on health care when we need it most – but only if we demand it.
California has often led the way in enacting progressive legislation before it is enacted nationally. We don’t ultimately know what trajectory the fight to win Medicare for All will take, but we do know that we have to fight on every platform we can.
In solidarity,
Phillip Kim
