Dear John,

In this season of thanks, thank you for adding your voice to the call to make gun violence rare and abnormal. The call to action could not be more urgent as we witness an escalation in gun violence across the nation. Against the tragic backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic and protests against police brutality and systemic racism, there has been a surge in firearm homicides, increased gun sales nationwide, and armed insurrectionists and militia groups openly carrying assault weapons in public spaces.

Over the course of this turbulent year, at every step of the way, the Coalition to Stop Violence (CSGV) and our sister organization, the Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence, created tools to help stem the tide of gun violence. We responded to the intersection of guns and COVID-19, provided recommendations to make polling places safe from armed intimidation, highlighted the connections between police violence and the rise in community violence, and called for the prohibition of the open carry of firearms in public.

We used our public health data and equitable approaches to provide solutions to keep communities safe. None of this would have been possible without support from generous donors. Thank you.

As we continue to face the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic and the exacerbation of the social and economic inequities that are the root causes of gun violence, I welcome the hope that the Biden administration offers to forge a new path forward.

Despite the deep divisions that remain embedded in the electorate, the majority of Americans, no matter how they voted, support measures to reduce gun injuries and deaths. President-Elect Biden has a long record of supporting evidence-based gun violence prevention measures, and I am energized by the progress that I believe is possible.

I am grateful to count you among those who share CSGV's vision for a safer society. Together we can drive meaningful policy change and pass life-saving legislation.

We're only as strong as the community that supports us, so thank you for providing CSGV with the foundation on which to build a future free from gun violence. Your generosity helps us work every day to save lives.

Thank you for uniting with us in community and solidarity. Wishing you and all your loved ones a safe, healthy, and happy Thanksgiving!

With gratitude,

Josh Horwitz
