Dear John,
Yesterday, we learned that the current administration will begin transition of power to the Biden-Harris team. The Ms. Foundation is ready to get to work as we enter a new day in our democracy. That’s why I am excited about our “When Women Win” campaign to raise $100,000 by November 30th.
John, we have an opportunity to make real progress towards gender and racial equity in the coming months and years. Will you make a gift of $10, $25 or even $100 to the “When Women Win” campaign before next Monday so that women and girls have the resources needed for the fight ahead?
I’d like to introduce you to Pabitra Benjamin, a Ms. Foundation grantee-partner whose work saved lives in her community at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Pabitra is the executive director of Adhikaar, a worker and community center that serves and organizes workers in the Nepali community of Queens. When New York City became the epicenter of the pandemic, Pabitra worked to organize essentials: food, testing, relief checks, and safety pay for workers. Early in the pandemic, information wasn’t available in Nepali and other languages spoken by Adhikaar members.
But there was an even more pressing need: immediate access to safe housing.
Many Adhikaar members live in overcrowded spaces where quarantining is impossible. By shining a light on the especially dire situation facing elderly and high-risk individuals, Pabitra was able to convince the city to house the most vulnerable community members in hotel rooms. Adhikaar’s successful lobbying and organizing efforts literally saved lives.
Of the $67 billion in funding from U.S. foundations each year, less than 2% is earmarked for women. And it’s much less for women and girls of color: only one half of 1%.
The Ms. Foundation is fighting for a brand new day for all women, girls, and nonbinary people. We provide a range of resources, including multi-year general operating support grants, to help grantees deepen and grow their work. We are holding philanthropy accountable to stand with us and learn with us so that, together, we can do better.
Can you feel a new day coming? Make your gift to the “When Women Win” campaign before Monday, November 30th. It is time to get serious about the hard work ahead.
In solidarity,
Teresa C. Younger
