SPECIAL LEGISLATIVE SESSION UNDERWAY TODAY TO ADDRESS PANDEMIC CRISIS

Today state lawmakers will hold a mostly virtual Special Session to focus on COVID-19 relief for New Mexicans. Lawmakers want to set aside $330 million. The CARES Act federal funding includes $194 million for unemployed New Mexicans, $100 million for small business grants and $15 million for housing assistance.

While we support the need to help New Mexicans in this crisis, this is just another band-aid approach to resolving a long-term problem. We need a solution that will get our economy humming again and allow people to again receive regular paychecks.

New Mexico's virus rates continue to soar while the governor's lockdowns get tougher.

The state's crackdown has led to long lines at grocery stores after the governor placed capacity limits on essential businesses. The Governor's Office has refused to admit these lines are even happening, calling them a "Republican talking point."

The governor needs to wake up and see what's happening in her state.

UNEMPLOYMENT CLIMBS IN NEW MEXICO

New Mexico’s latest unemployment rate of 8.1% is nearly double the national average. Gov. Lujan Grisham’s tough and unfair treatment of businesses and other establishments during the pandemic continues to punish New Mexico businesses and working families.

Of course unemployment is climbing: businesses have been forced to shut down or partially close, leading to layoffs. The governor must reopen the state so people can resume their lives. If neighboring states can do this, so can we.

The statewide initial claims leaped from 3,772 to 5,079, the highest since August 8.

STATE WANTS MONEY FOR 28 ELECTRIC CARS

Here’s something that won’t surprise you.

The Democrat-led state is pushing for $1 million to add 28 electric vehicles to its fleet. Is this the time? The request comes from the General Services Department. You’d think during this pandemic as families and employees are suffering, the state could use this money more appropriately. This is another example of the government wasting funds.
