Dear John:
It’s official: In 2021, for the very first time, Democrats will have a veto-proof SUPERMAJORITY in the New York Senate!
Despite millions of dollars in fear-mongering ads spent by police unions about criminal justice reform, New York voters sent a clear message: We need bold action to recover from the Covid-19 crisis, and we need it now.
With 5,000 New Yorkers coming down with coronavirus every day, millions still unemployed, and small businesses and families struggling to afford rent, that action can’t wait any longer.
Right now, Gov. Cuomo and the legislature should do what Congress has failed to do: Fund COVID relief for New York families, and pay for it by raising taxes on millionaires and billionaires.
It wasn’t that long ago that a group of turncoat Democrats supported by Governor Cuomo helped Republicans block progressive legislation in Albany year after year.
But together, we organized to beat back the IDC and elect transformative leaders like Senator Alessandra Biaggi, Zellnor Myrie, Jessica Ramos, and Andrew Gounardes.
This year, despite the pandemic, Democrats across the state mobilized to keep their seats and win four more. Now there’s no excuse for Governor Cuomo and the Senate and House leadership not to act.
Gov. Cuomo says we need federal assistance -- and he’s absolutely right. The MTA is in crisis. Millions are unemployed. And Covid-related costs are mounting. Progressive state taxation won’t be enough on its own. But it’s time to stop indulging the fantasy that Mitch McConnell and Republicans in Washington will find their conscience and stop blocking relief for the millions facing hunger and eviction right now.
New York is home to some of the wealthiest people on the planet. It’s common sense that during this unprecedented emergency, we ask them to pay a little bit more so millions of their fellow New Yorkers can survive this crisis.
Now, the voters have spoken and given Democrats a supermajority. It’s imperative that they act now -- with or without the governor’s signature.
Thank you so much,
-- Team Lander
