As part of the Russell Kirk Center’s 25^th anniversary virtual gala on October 21, we hosted a first-ever virtual walking tour of Russell’s library. The tour began outside the former woodworking shop that Russell converted into his personal library building and continued inside to Russell’s desk where we discussed his writing habits. Along the way, we paused to describe a few historical artifacts and how the Center’s programs organically developed from Russell’s mentorship of students, professors, and journalists at this location.

Noted historian George Nash delivered an engaging keynote talk considering the significance of Russell’s work and its bearing on the Center’s purpose. Nash explored the distinctive perspective the Center brings to the conservative cause, focusing on what Ronald Reagan called the “ancient truths of our civilization.”

This month’s featured Classic Kirk essay, “F. Marion Crawford: Grand Romantic ([link removed]) ,” will be particularly interesting to those of you whom enjoy visiting used bookstores. Russell was surprised to be asked to write a forward to An F. Marion Crawford Companion as he had never included him in any of his writings. But for fifty years Russell had been collecting works by that author and recalled exactly where he had obtained each book in vivid detail.

He pays tribute to the strong influence that Crawford’s historical Romances and novels exerted upon him, particularly his own fiction. Toward the conclusion, Russell wrote, “We seem to be entering upon an age of mystery and trial. Out of renewed perceptions and chastening experiences may come a fresh search for the wondrous.”
