Dear John,
December 12th is the 5th anniversary of the Paris Climate Agreement, when 196 countries agreed to keep global warming “well below” 2C and pursue efforts to limit the temperature rise to 1.5C. But so far the reality has not lived up to the rhetoric. The only thing that can tip the balance towards climate action is sustained people power.
That’s where you come in. Imagine if one thousand people from all corners of Ireland met their TDs online on Monday 7th December to press the case for faster and fairer climate action? It could be monumental!

Global emissions hit an all time high in 2019 - and the world is on course for a catastrophic 3 degrees of global warming. Many of the world’s poorest communities, who have done least to cause climate change, are already facing its impacts - like extreme flooding, drought, food shortages and heatwaves.
Both the Irish Government and the EU have promised to adopt new legally binding targets and step up action in 2021. But powerful vested interests, from the fossil fuel industry to agri-business, are lobbying hard to dilute and delay action.
Talking to your TDs is a powerful tool in the climate action toolbox. Emailing TDs is great but the impact of a personal conversation is hard to beat. Particularly in Ireland we have real access to our politicians and we know that Irish politicians listen to their voters.
So will you speak up for climate action on 7th December?

We know it can feel daunting to talk to your TDs. But fear not. Chances are, you know a lot more about climate change than they do! And you’ll be connected with other people from your constituency - so you can meet your TDs as a group. We’re working with local climate action groups to organise specific times for meetings with each TD. We’ll be in touch again when these times are confirmed.

John, I’m not going to lie. We’ve our work cut out for us when it comes to addressing the climate crisis. But thanks to the actions of people like you, climate action has shot up the political agenda. And we can push it up further again. Working together on the 7th December, we can make the case for faster and fairer climate action impossible to ignore.
I hope to see you next Monday as we prepare for the 7th.
