[1]Women's March
I’m very excited and proud to share this news with you,
John.
Today we’re announcing our endorsement of Rep. Deb Haaland, an enrolled
citizen of the Pueblo of Laguna, to be the next Secretary of the Interior
alongside our partners: Native Organizers Alliance and IllumiNative.
We’re also joining with the over 120 Indigenous Tribal leaders who have
called on the Biden Administration to appoint Haaland to the post. Rep.
Haaland would be the first Native person to ever serve in the U.S.
Cabinet.

Endorse Rep. Deb Haaland →
Biden just announced six Cabinet appointments today, so time is of the
essence. The transition team is reviewing the short list of candidates and
making decisions as we speak.
Every signature shows the president-elect how many people support
Haaland’s appointment. It’s not enough for Women’s March to endorse – we
need real people like you across the country signing on to the letter as
endorsers to show our power.
Rep. Haaland’s work in the House Natural Resources Committee has proven
that she will serve the interests of all people, dedicate herself to
preserving public lands, and honor Nation-to-Nation relations with tribes.
The Department of the Interior (DOI) oversees public lands, manages Indian
Trust funds, and houses the Bureau of Indian Affairs. For too long, the
DOI has placed the demands of the energy and extractive industries over
the needs of everyday people, Indigenous nations, and the planet.
Haaland will help reverse the damage done by the Trump Administration to
reduce environmental protections and undermine tribal sovereignty. Her
nomination would also signal an acknowledgement of the enormous role
Indigenous people play in combating climate change.

Secretary of the Interior.
This is our first endorsement for Biden’s Cabinet. We’ve made it clear
that we demand Biden appoint progressive leaders to his Cabinet and that
at least half of his appointees are women.
Together we can ensure that Rep. Haaland and more women like her have a
voice in our highest halls of power.
In solidarity,
Rachel Carmona
