Our Revolution is calling on President-elect Joe Biden to live up to his claims of wanting to heal the nation by appointing Rep. Deb Haaland — a progressive champion who we endorsed in 2018 — to be the next Secretary of the Interior.

Rep. Haaland would be the first Indigenous person to run any Cabinet-level Department in our nation’s history.

For far too long, the Department of the Interior has failed to live up to its obligations to Indigenous Peoples, and nominating Haaland would be a sign that Biden cares about a long systematically oppressed community and will fight to undo structural oppression.

Deb is a true champion for the people. She physically stood with other Indigenous Peoples at Standing Rock protesting the illegal and immoral acts the Trump Administration inflicted on peaceful protestors on behalf of the greed of the fossil fuel industry.

It’s clear that she understands the importance of defending the land from corporate monopolies.

It is well past time that an Indigenous person brings history full circle at the Department of Interior, making the agency more just and equitable, fully protecting the interests of Indigenous Peoples, and importantly, making the Department a true long-term steward of our nation’s most precious resources.
