Friend: As a supporter who is also committed to ensuring that underserved communities have access to health services, we hope you’ll take some time to learn about some of our incredible partners and the people they serve.
In Immokalee, Florida, migrant farmworkers continued working throughout the pandemic. These essential workers help feed the country, but most have minimal access to health care and COVID-19 testing. Since the start of the outbreak, the Coalition for Immokalee Workers (CIW) has advocated for public health interventions and policies to reduce community transmission, such as community-wide multilingual education, increased access to free COVID-19 testing, affordable health care, and safe places for exposed or sick people to isolate.
When Puerto Rico saw a sharp increase in COVID-19 cases over the summer, at-risk groups on the island, like the homebound elderly, faced compounding crises. Our teams worked with local organizations and community leaders to provide home-based primary care, as well as COVID-19 monitoring for people who tested positive and had mild or moderate symptoms, or those who were asymptomatic. At the end of September, MSF handed over medical activities to Puerto Rico Salud (PRS), an organization formed by four local members of our team seeking to carry on this vital work.
There are around 80,000 people experiencing homelessness in New York City, and several thousand of them sleep on the streets every night. Access to showers and hygiene facilities has been a long-standing issue in the city, and became critical when most public facilities were shut down due to the pandemic. Recognizing this need, our teams partnered with local organizations to open temporary relief stations in Manhattan. The stations included a safe place to shower and use the toilet, as well as access to hygiene kits and clean clothes. In July, MSF handed over shower operations to Shower Power, a local organization which works to increase access to hygiene and self-care resources for people experiencing homelessness in New York City.
These are just a few of the incredible local organizations who helped make our COVID-19 activities in the United States possible and will help our work continue. We’re so grateful to our partners for their dedication to these communities, day in and day out. We’re also grateful to supporters like you, who have made our rapid and continued response to this pandemic possible.
