Public Citizen is, and always has been, nonpartisan.
That means we call out politicians and government officials — Democrats and Republicans alike — who put the greed of billionaires and Big Business before the needs of everyday Americans, the health of our planet, or the preservation of the democratic ideals at the heart of this nation.
It does NOT mean that we will sit by and hold our tongues when any party is undermining the very bedrock of the experiment in democracy — a work in progress to be sure — that is the United States of America.
Right now, one of the two major political parties in our country is upending nearly 250 years of history and threatening the very concept of free and fair elections.
- In their embrace of, fealty to, and cowardice before the cult of Trumpism, far too many Republican leaders have revealed the utter hollowness of their commitment to supposedly core notions like “small government,” “states’ rights,” “law and order,” “fiscal responsibility,” “national security,” and “freedom.”
- This is not about whether Joe Biden will be the next president. We must remain vigilant, but Joe Biden will be the next president.
- This is about whether a huge portion of the country wrongly believes that Biden’s presidency is illegitimate — and rejects the most basic premises of an electoral democracy. That’s the tinder Republicans are lighting.
- Making it all the worse, whatever lies Trump has told himself, Republican leaders know that Biden won — they just find it politically inconvenient to say so.
The Republican Party is actively courting authoritarianism.
Tell Republican leaders:
No more hemming and hawing. State unequivocally that Joe Biden won the election. Urge an end to Trump’s efforts to undermine democratic processes. And call on the General Services Administration to recognize Biden’s victory so the official transition can begin.
You are undermining the very concept of democracy. You are doing grievous — perhaps irreparable — harm to the United States of America. Stop. Just stop.
Add your name.
Thanks for taking action.
For democracy,
- Robert Weissman, President of Public Citizen
P.S. For half a century, Public Citizen has been advancing policies that put the needs of everyday Americans before the greed of billionaires and Big Business. That legacy of progress and that ongoing work could not matter more right now, as our nation transitions to a Joe Biden presidency that will be as progressive as we — you and Public Citizen, together — make it.
Of course, we’re also busy undoing damage the Trump administration has already done and watching out for whatever shenanigans a lame-duck Donald Trump tries to get away with. And — like so many nonprofits and small businesses — we continue to experience financial strain related to the coronavirus pandemic.
If you can, please make an emergency donation today to support the critical work we’re doing together or even join our popular Monthly Giving program. Thank you.
