What to Know: Black Lives Matter activists are feuding with Democrats who don’t go far enough—in their eyes—in defunding the police.

The TPPF Take: Defunding the police isn’t the answer. Developing better police officers is.

“The last thing we want to do is defund the police,” says TPPF’s Currie Myers, a retired sheriff. “That doesn’t mean there aren’t things we can do better. Everyone needs to work together to ensure that law enforcement is a positive part of government.”

What to Know: Calls are growing louder for Vice President Joe Biden to “cancel” student loan debt via executive order once he’s in the White House.

The TPPF Take: We don’t need to cancel debt freely entered into by students; instead, we should address the real problem—college affordability. Texas has done that, with the Texas Affordable Baccalaureate Program.

“In the years following then-Gov. Rick Perry’s State of the State Address in which he called for the creation of affordable bachelor’s degree programs, Texas’ public universities have risen to the challenge,” says TPPF’s Tom Lindsay. “To make college more affordable for even more Texans, each public university should have at least one bachelor’s degree under the Affordable Baccalaureate Program.”

Liberty Action Agenda

What to Know: During the COVID-19 pandemic, the rules for telemedicine have been relaxed.

The TPPF Take: Making telemedicine more available to Texans is part of TPPF’s Liberty Action Agenda.

“Telemedicine offers a convenient and safe alternative to traveling long distances to see a doctor,” says TPPF’s David Balat. “Texas should permanently eliminate regulations waived during the coronavirus outbreak that increased telemedicine access and lower costs.”
