What if your child contracted COVID-19 and you were unable to care for them? That’s the situation for thousands of parents of incarcerated children, more than 2,300 of whom have tested positive. You would not be allowed to visit. Your son or daughter would probably be isolated—alone with their fears nearly 24 hours a day—wondering if they might die without seeing you again. This is not a hypothetical situation. This is the painful reality that thousands of children and families live with every day. And it is unacceptable. The Sentencing Project, with the support of people like you, is doing something about it. From the beginning of the pandemic, we have documented what children are facing from COVID in youth detention facilities across the country. But more than that, we have developed solutions and public officials are paying attention. Fewer children are being incarcerated and hundreds are being returned safely to their families. More detention facilities are testing and providing treatment. Tragically, the pandemic rages and the health of incarcerated youth remains in jeopardy. But with your support we will get more kids home to their families. As Giving Tuesday approaches, I hope you will consider a donation to The Sentencing Project—and urge your friends and family to join us as well. |
